Chapter Thirteen

Liv returned to her office from taking Matty to the airport, to find a large bouquet of flowers on her desk. Twain.

Now that Matty was off to Florida to visit her parents for his spring break, she and Twain would be able to start…trying again.

This past week, since the night they’d picked up Matty from the Summers’ home, their son had been grounded, so there had never been a good time for Liv and Twain to sneak away.

They’d also taken away Matty’s phone for the week, and he was working for Twain after school without pay. And they’d been long hours, as Twain was staying late, trying to get as much done as possible before road restrictions were put in place.

While driving to pick up Matty from the Summers’ home, they’d toyed with the idea of canceling Matty’s trip to visit her parents over break. But the plane ticket had long been paid for, and her parents were really looking forward to their youngest grandchild’s visit. It would have been a far-reaching penance that would affect more than just Matty, so they’d allowed the trip to stand.

Which, if these flowers were any indication, would also serve as time for them to create the baby she ached for.

It was a sweet gesture. In fact, she couldn’t ever remember Twain sending her flowers to work before. When they’d been married, he quite often brought her wildflowers that he’d picked in the woods, which she always put in the beautiful crystal vase Molly had given her at Liv’s bridal shower. But never flowers from a florist sent to her office.

Not that he hadn’t been thoughtful, but the majority of the gifts and surprises he’d given her were things he’d made. Which, quite honestly, were much more precious to her than flowers that needed to be thrown away after a few days.

But to get this lovely bouquet today, when Matty had just left for a week, signaled to Liv that Twain was fully on board with her desire to have another child. And to get started on it…now.

“Oh good, you’re back,” Liv’s coworker Cathy said as she came through Liv’s door. “I’ve been dying to know who sent those to you. But by the look on your face, I’m guessing you already know who they’re from.” She sat on the edge of Liv’s desk close to where Liv stood. “You’ve been holding out on me, Liv,” Cathy said with a kidding tone, that Liv knew wasn’t all that joking.

Cathy Brandon was Liv’s closest work friend, office confidante, and occasional Friday after-work wine (and whine) partner. A few years older than Liv, Cathy bordered on being bitter with life, but had treated Liv well, even when Liv had been promoted to the dean’s assistant three years ago, leaving Cathy in the cubicle administrative area. Round and tidy, with short, slightly graying hair, Cathy wore sensible shoes, slacks, and a silky blouse with a large collar under a cardigan nearly every day. The colors changed,
